He seems to be part of an expanded 38-man squad for the games at the end of the month.

As a free agent, Danny Butterworth's contract did not HAVE to be done today.

However, Swindon will have had to include their decision within their playing budget calculations, and ensure they can get whatever other business they want done within the limitations of League Two.

This is where SCMP (Salary Cost Management Protocol) comes into it. In this division, teams can spend 50 per cent of revenue and football fortune income (prize money, transfer fees), and 50 per cent of any owner equity invested, on their playing budget.

Swindon have been getting closer to that 50 per cent level as they responded to injuries to Gavin Kilkenny and Fletcher Holman, and a deal for Butterworth - even at a modest level - has to be factored into the equation.
