There was something quite Dickensian about the County Ground on Saturday afternoon.

A pea-soup fog sat stubbornly on top of central Swindon as the stadium’s ageing floodlights tried, desperately but in vain, to burn through the thick haze.

Hot running water was not always easy to come by, and a curious character in a bakerboy cap played a pivotal role in the storyline. Throw in a haunting old lady in a wedding dress and an escaped convict, and the scene would have been ripe for a BBC period drama.
