Clash of two FA Cup no-hopers gives Swindon Town opportunity to build ahead of long, cold winter

Over the course of the past 12 seasons, Town and Colchester have gracelessly tripped over the first hurdle on nine occasions each. In all rounds in that time, they have lost to non-League opposition nine times between them.

A glamour tie! Swindon Town will host Colchester United in the first round of the FA Cup in the sort of draw which will leave both sets of supporters… well… somewhat underwhelmed.

That said, there is opportunity here for Town. Actually, there is more than opportunity. Progression in the famous old cup competition could end up being critical.

With nearly a quarter of the League Two season gone, and despite the win over Cheltenham, Swindon’s chances of pushing for promotion are scant.

Successive home appointments against two of the best teams in the divisions – Doncaster and Gillingham – will be the acid test of how the rest of the campaign is likely to pan out.
