A year on from a dark day in Colchester, there is much to lift the winter gloom... so why does it not feel that way?

Objectively, this is a standout season. To this point, the best non-pandemic season for a decade. It ought to be the stuff of excitement that borders on the irresponsible. Instead, there remains a lingering sense of ‘yes… but’.

Just a year ago, the world was collapsing in on Swindon Town.

Can it really have only been 12 months? On the field, at least, the difference between the Town of December 3, 2024 and the Town of December 3, 2025 is ridiculous. Ironman levels of stark.

A year ago tonight, Ian Holloway took his inherited squad to Colchester United on a freezing Tuesday evening and watched in horror as his players proceeded to deliver a display of rank ineptitude.
