There are fears Ryan Tafazolli could be sidelined for months after the full extent of his toe injury was established.
The Swindon Town centre-back has struggled for fitness again this season and has missed several matches after picking up a foot injury.
Town had initially hoped his absence would be brief, but further analysis of the problem has shown that the 34-year-old has bone bruising on the toe in question.
Manager Ian Holloway has conceded that could lead to a lengthy absence from first-team affairs.
