The Moonraker’s editor Sam Morshead has been shortlisted for a prominent sports journalism award.

Morshead is up for the regional journalist of the year at the 2025 British Sports Journalism Awards.

The nod is recognition of The Moonraker’s expanding and in-depth coverage of Swindon Town over the course of last year.

The site, founded in August 2024, has carried a wealth of exclusive news, broad and deep features, informative analysis, and matchday commentary over the course of its 20-month lifespan.

Now backed by nearly 600 paying subscribers, The Moonraker has established itself as part of the Swindon media landscape.

The SJA nomination puts Morshead on a shortlist with several regional sportswriting heavyweights, including Jon Colman (Newsquest Cumbria’s Carlisle United reporter) and Neil Allen (the longstanding Portsmouth correspondent for The News).

There are six journalists vying for the 2025 title, with the winner set to be announced at a gala dinner at the London Palladium on April 27.

Morshead said: “It’s a thrill to be recognised in the company of so many excellent regional sports journalists.

“Thank you to the Moonraker members, without whose support, loyalty and trust the site simply would cease to exist.”
