Swindon Town will miss out on Jack Payne, with the midfielder set to choose Colchester United over a host of interested clubs.

Payne was a free agent after leaving Charlton Athletic at the end of last season, and was one of several players targeted by Swindon during this summer's rebuild under new head coach Mark Kennedy.

The 29-year-old received an offer in principle from Town, as well as further approaches from MK Dons, two League One clubs and sides in MLS.

However, he has chosen instead to move to Essex and sign for the Cowley brothers - the managerial team with whom he previously worked at Lincoln City.
