"If I'm Plymouth, I'm not happy with that": Ian Holloway questions reasoning behind Luton Town advancing in EFL Trophy

The EFL put Luton into the quarter-finals, despite the Hatters having not earned the right to participate. That has irked Holloway, who believes that the fairest option would have been for Plymouth to progress.

Ian Holloway has questioned why Luton Town have been allowed back in the EFL Trophy following Swindon Town’s expulsion, saying Plymouth Argyle ought to have received a bye into the semi-finals.

Swindon were thrown out of the Trophy on Wednesday (February 4), following an EFL disciplinary hearing related to the Robins fielding two ineligible players during their 2-1 win at Luton last month.

Ollie Clarke played despite being midway through a seven-match ban, while Aaron Drinan came on as a second-half substitute despite his name not being included on the teamsheet submitted to officials.

After the FA upheld charges against Swindon and Clarke relating to a failure to abide by the terms of the Town captain’s suspension, the EFL was left with little option but to remove the Robins from the competition in an effort to protect the tournament’s integrity.
