Is Swindon Town's slow start now banished to the past? The numbers that show Mark Kennedy's men are starting to click

The hilarious opening scene of Four Weddings And A Funeral is the classic story of how life can quickly run away from you if you’re even slightly under prepared. And it is bizarrely applicable to the experiences of being a Swindon fan over the early weeks of the new campaign.

Here’s an A-Level media studies essay question that’ll never get asked: what similarities can you find between the writing of Richard Curtis and Swindon Town’s start to the 2024/25 League Two season?

Okay, bear with me. There’s a point to this, I promise.

For those who have not seen Four Weddings And A Funeral (and why not, I demand of you), Hugh Grant’s character, Charles, and his on-screen sister Scarlett oversleep on the day of a friend’s wedding, prompting a chaotic race to the church.

The first five words of dialogue in the film are all “f**k”, and we’re also treated to a “f***ity f**k” and a “b****r” before the title credits have stopped rolling. In the meantime, the pair have failed to get one car to start, missed their turning off the motorway, nearly reversed into an oncoming lorry, and rocked up at the venue half-dressed just as the bride’s vehicle pulls up in front of them.
