That was not what was needed.
After the performance and result at York City on Saturday, there was always a danger that perhaps the most innocuous fixture of Swindon Town’s season could become toxic.
And so, in front of 1,433 supporters on a relatively inconsequential evening in Wiltshire, the tensions and the frustrations started to deepen.
The Robins were incoherent against a Crystal Palace side who arrived at the County Ground wanting to play on the floor and, perhaps surprisingly, were met by a Swindon side that wanted to do the same.
