Given the raft of injuries experienced by Swindon Town over the course of pre-season, and the timing of the League Cup first round, a full week ahead of the League Two kick-off, Ian Holloway was only really going to be able to treat the trip to Cardiff City as a glorified final friendly.
That might gall some supporters, particularly those of a certain vintage – Town’s glorious League Cup campaign of 1968/69 began before the league term, with a 2-1 win over Torquay United at the County Ground, after all – but it is the indisputable reality of the situation.
