Hope is an uncomfortable commodity at the County Ground.
The 21st-century has taught the Swindon Town community to lean towards expecting the worst. It feels more natural to be constantly trepidatious. It feels more natural to look over our shoulders.
There is good reason for this. The past 25 years have, in general, not been particularly kind to this club. Two generations have grown up knowing little more than a downwards trendline, with success and satisfaction the occasion anomalies, not the norm.
It has become difficult to believe. It has become almost impossible to expect the best.
