Welcome to the world's worst comedown: Swindon Town baffle with low-intensity, low-creativity display against Cheltenham

ANALYSIS: The two teams were feeble in possession, the wind blew best-laid plans off course, and frankly we’d all have been better served sitting somewhere warmer. Somewhere more festive. Somewhere that offered joy rather than hoovering up every crumb of positivity.

The Lord Mayor’s Show had packed up, the cleaning crews had swept through, the fields were returned to the sheep, and then Swindon Town turned up to play Cheltenham.

Three short days after a stunning victory over Bolton Wanderers, Swindon appeared to be an entirely different team as they slipped to home defeat against their relegation-threatened local rivals in a midweek misery-fest that sapped so much of the feel-good factor from the County Ground air.

Ethon Archer’s cannonball winner just before the hour was a lone moment of sparkling quality in a game that otherwise lacked even so much as an imitation of pazazz.
